Our Story

Picture this: A health-focused executive who carries coffee books in his backpack and films his pre-dawn brewing routine. That's Ben, and in 2017, he transformed his passion into Sumato Coffee Company. Why? Because he believed workplace coffee could be more than just a caffeine delivery system—it could be an experience worth looking forward to. Every bag is still roasted fresh right here in Salt Lake City before it ships to offices and home offices around the country.

Where the Name Comes From

"Sumato" comes from the Japanese word "Sumāto" (スマート), meaning smart, stylish, or sleek. That's not a coincidence, it's the whole point. Ben built the company around the idea that better coffee comes from smarter choices: the right grind for your brew method, coarse for French press, fine for espresso, and drinking your coffee within that 2-to-14-day window after roasting, while it's still near its peak freshness. Even the name is a small reminder: good coffee isn't about doing more, it's about knowing which details actually matter AND getting those right.
