Refresh your summer with 3 Cold Brew Coffee Recipes

Summer is in full swing, the heat wave is out in full force across the country and many of you are probably taking a break from the hot drinks in search of something a little more refreshing.

For starters — Cold Brew is the process of leaching flavor from the beans directing using water produces a chemical profile different from conventional brewing methods. Coffee is steeped over 12–15 hours, a slow brewing method and ultimately creates fuller-bodied, sweeter and less acidic flavor profile.

AND No — Cold brew is not just hot coffee poured over ice. It’s totally different. Cold brew involves slow-steeping coffee beans before straining them out.

Below are 3 ways to make your own cold brew coffee: 

1) So Here’s How To Do It With A French Press. The simplest way in our opinion:

  1. Grind 54 grams (3.6 tablespoons) of coffee beans and place in a large (8-cup) French press. In our humble opinion, the freshly roasted within 14 days,.
    (pss..Sumato Espresso Blend beans seem to work the best… no bias here)
  2. Add 800 ml (~ 3.4 cups) of filtered water at any temperature.
  3. Stir the grinds into the water.
  4. Place the French press plunger on top and store in the fridge for 12 hours.
  5. Carefully press down on the plunger to push all the grounds to the bottom

2) Vanilla-Infused Cold Brew
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Sumato Coffee beans (coarsely ground)
- 4 cups cold water
- 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped (optional) OR just use Pure Vanilla Creamer

Instructions:

  1. Combine the coarsely ground coffee and vanilla bean (both the pod and the scraped seeds) in a large jar.
  2. Add the cold water and stir gently to ensure all the coffee is wet.
  3. Cover and let it steep in the refrigerator for 18-24 hours.
  4. Remove the vanilla bean pod after steeping.
  5. Strain the brew using a fine mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter.
  6. Serve over ice with a splash of Vanilla cream or a sweetener of your choice.

3) Cold Brew with Citrus Twist
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Sumato Coffee beans (coarsely ground)
- 4 cups cold water
- Orange or lemon peel strips

Instructions:

  1. Place the coarsely ground coffee in a large jar.
  2. Add the citrus peel strips on top of the coffee grounds.
  3. Pour the cold water over the coffee and citrus peels.
  4. Stir gently, then cover the jar.
  5. Let it steep at room temperature for 18-24 hours.
  6. Strain the brew carefully to remove all grounds and citrus peels.
  7. Serve the cold brew over ice, garnished with a fresh slice of orange or lemon.
